Mexico City, October 25, 2018.- Grupo Viva Aerobus, the holding company of Viva Aerobus, Mexico's ultra-low-cost airline, reported a 26% increase in its total operating revenue of the third quarter of 2018, compared to the same period of 2017. The airline amounted 2,818 million pesos under this concept, in contrast to the 2,240 million pesos corresponding to 3Q2017. This as a result of the growing preference of passengers and a proposal that allows customers to personalize their trip.
In this sense, the airline achieved a growth of 21% in passenger traffic in 3Q2018 compared to the same period of 2017, having transported near 2.8 million passengers. Also, according to the latest data from the Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil (General Direction of Civil Aviation or "DGAC", by its Spanish acronym) Viva was the fastest growing airline in the industry, in terms of domestic and total passenger traffic, achieving growth rates of 18.3% and 20.9%, respectively. In addition, in August, Viva Aerobus achieved a 19.3% share of passengers carried in the domestic market, positioning itself, for the first time, on the podium of the 3 airlines that head this sector.
Moreover, Viva reached a load factor of 91% during this quarter, being one of the highest in the entire continent.
In terms of the expansion and growth strategy of Viva Aerobus, this quarter was characterized by the announcement of the second largest acquisition of aircraft in its history; the launching of 10 new flights, thus exceeding the offer of 100 routes for the first time; the start of 3 new routes and the announcement of the new connecting flights service from Monterrey.
Besides, in recent months, new Airbus A320neo aircraft were incorporated, closing September with a fleet consisting of 27 aircraft, being one of the youngest in the world with an average age of less than 4.5 years.
Gian Carlo Nucci, CEO of Grupo Viva Aerobus, mentioned that the low-cost model of the company provided the necessary support to face the challenging environment that has prevailed in the sector, especially due to the increase in the price of fuel.
"This second half of the year, we reaffirm the consolidation of our positioning in the Mexican market thanks to our operational efficiency. We have achieved a cost per seat-kilometer available of 78 cents, one of the lowest among operators in the Americas. We are the Mexican airline with the lowest cost structure", added Gian Carlo Nucci.
