Mexico City, January 7, 2021. - Viva Aerobus, Mexico´s ultra-low-cost carrier, reported more than 1.1 million passengers, a 15% in-crease compared to last November. Besides, this figure is close to the levels registered during Decem-ber 2019, when the airline reported just over 1.13 million passengers (less than 3% difference be-tween both years). This was a result of the airline's responsible reactivation strategy and the expan-sion of its route offer in order to meet, safely and reliably, the needs of air connectivity according to current demand.
During 2020, Viva Aerobus achieved a gradual and constant restoration of demand based on its low prices and its renewed commitment to health care through the Viva Contigo (Viva with You) preven-tion and hygiene program and on a greater flexibility by innovating with products such as Full Refund, Zero Fare and getting rid of change fees. Consequently, Viva ended up the year with more than 8 mil-lion passengers and an annual load factor of 80.5%.
In this challenging year for the air sector, Viva Aerobus has led the industry´s reactivation by becoming the first airline in America to resume 100% of its operational capacity, an achievement accomplished in November. Subsequently, Viva consolidated as the first Mexican airline to grow its operational capaci-ty, increasing its offer (available seat kilometers) by 11% in December 2020 compared to this same month during 2019. Therefore, Viva concluded 2020 with 131 routes (103 domestic within Mexico and 28 international), 12 more routes than in 2019.
This expanded offer implied the launch of 28 new nonstop flights: 13 domestic within Mexico and 11 international during 2020. From Monterrey, new flights began to Havana, San Antonio (SAT) and Dallas Fort Worth (DFW); from Cancun to Aguascalientes, Houston, San Luis Potosi, and the Cuban cities: Ha-vana, Holguin, Santa Clara, and Santiago; the routes Mazatlan – Chihuahua and Merida – Havana; and from Mexico City to Acapulco, Ciudad Obregon, Campeche, Ciudad del Carmen, Chetumal, Durango, La Paz, Los Mochis, Tampico, Veracruz, Chicago, DFW, Houston, Havana, Los Angeles, and San Antonio.
"We start this year 100% prepared to serve our passengers as they deserve: with low prices, disciplined prevention and hygiene protocols, greater flexibility and more routes to travel safely wherever and whenever they need to”, said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus. “2020 was a challenging year for the entire sector, but Viva's solid business model, our resilience and adaptability allowed us to lead within a responsible reactivation. We have increased our opera-tion, identified new market opportunities and achieved a growing preference of travelers. What´s more, last December we almost equaled the number of passengers registered in that same month during 2019”, he added.
